(Lights up on a room, in a home, on Thanksgiving Day. Food preparation is ending and the table is being set. There are chairs/cubes for sitting; a table/cube for the dinner; bowls; plates; cups; a vase with flowers; and an almost empty bottle of wine. Three women, The Cousin Chorus, Black, 40s, are busy completing preparations for Thanksgiving dinner. They are well-dressed, each in their own way. They are moving around in a choreographed dance of putting down/picking up things. They speak individually at times, but also in unison at times)

(Loud knock at the door)

THE COUSIN CHORUS
(They freeze. Speak in unison)
She’s here

(They unfreeze)

COUSIN #1
She’s late

COUSIN #2
She can wait

COUSIN #3
(Straightens her clothes and hair)
Her key should work – But I’ll let her in

COUSIN #2
Let her wait a minute – We don’t jump for her

COUSIN #1
Been away all this time – And shows up now – Why?

(Loud knocking continues)

COUSIN #3
Why wouldn’t she? – It’s her house

COUSIN #1
Is it?

COUSIN #2
She’s too bougie for this place

COUSIN #1
She’s California – We’re Deep South

COUSIN #3
But inside – Aren’t we all the same?

GOLDEN
(Wearing sunglasses, expensive clothing, and a silk scarf around her neck, rolling her suitcase behind her; rushes in and poses for a brief moment; then greets her cousins)
I found my key – Cousins, I’m home!

(Slowly turns around the room as if taking it in for the first time, almost in a trance, and talking to the house)
I have missed you – Your aging elegance – Your cracked paint over the window – The door to my room – I can still smell Grandmother

THE COUSIN CHORUS
(In unison)
That’s the turkey
