BIOGRAPHIES

PLAYWRIGHTS

TOM BRUETT (Welcome to the String), he/him, is a playwright whose work has been produced at La Jolla Playhouse/Blindspot Collective, PianoFight, SF Fringe, PCSF, ReGroup Theatre, Lakeshore Players, Players’ Theatre and Best of PlayGround 23 and 24. His full-length PlayGround commission, The Nesting Instinct, was read as part of Zoom Fest 2020. 

VICTORIA EVANS ERVILLE (Teen Prophet), she/her, is a Dramatist Guild member in her second season as a pool writer with PlayGround.  Last season two of her plays, Catch and The Verona Matchmakers, were selected for the Monday Night Reading Series. Her full-length play The Lies That Bind was a semi-finalist in the Bay Area Playwrights Festival 2019 and received a staged reading with 3Girls Theatre in 2020. In 2019 her short play A Mother’s Heart received a staged reading at the Women’s Theatre Festival, North Carolina, and ‘The Test’ was awarded Second Place at Piano Fight’s ShortLived VIII Festival -week 8. Her full-length play The Music of Mothers will receive a reading in 2021 with 3Girls Theatre, where Ms. Evans Erville is a 2019-2020 Brady Fellow.

ANNE YUMI KOBORI (Coward’s Flame), she/her, is an actor/playwright/director/producer. Her plays Seeds and Every Day Alice, and her adaptation of The Seagull, have premiered with Utopia Theatre Project. Currently, she is a co-writer for Braided: A Native Noh Story with Theatre of Yugen. BA in Theatre Arts, summa cum laude, Santa Clara University. www.anneyumikobori.com 

BACILIO MENDEZ II (Come to Jesús), he/him, is a proud member of Actors’ Equity and SAG-AFTRA. A 2019-20 Monday Night PlayGround initiate, as an actor, Bacilio is excited to now be a member of the Writers Pool. Cross your fingers for Bacilio; he’s waiting on CA Bar Exam results.

CHRISTIAN WILBURN (Sasha and the Angelier), he/him, discovered his love for storytelling as a young boy growing up in San Francisco. At twenty-four, and still in San Francisco, Christian views writing as his most authentic form of communication. He writes fiction, plays, screenplays, poems and twitter threads about the Golden State Warriors. Last year was his first year in the Playground Writer’s Pool, where he was selected for in Best of Playground 24. On top of the Writer’s Pool, Christian is a member of the Playground Playwright’s Residency Program and is pursuing his MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco. 

MADISON WETZELL (Tech Week), she/her, is a playwright based in the Bay Area. Past work includes Mediocre Heterosexual Sex (2019 Problematic Play Festival at Z-Space), The Official Unicorn Hunters’ Guide (winner of ShortLived VIII at PianoFight), Two Coins for the Ferryman, (3Girls Theater’s Innovators Program, 2018/19 and 19/20) and her translation and site-specific adaptation of The Bacchae, presented in Tilden Park in 2017. She is a co-founder of Liar Liar Theater and a member of the PlayGround writers pool. 

ACTORS

JEN ANAYA (Come to Jesús, “Dolly”), they/them, is a theatre/music/art-maker, doula, energetic healing practitioner and baby whisperer born and raised on Yavapaiv Apache and Cocopah land (AZ). They have performed throughout NYC, country and world, in rock bands, healing rituals, web series, art installations, plays, operas, films, musicals and as a part of Constellation Chor. Pre-CoVid, Jen was Mariposa in En Garde Arts’ Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes) at La Mama and Juno/Cellist in Miriam Pultro’s Comings and Goings. They’ve since done several zoom plays, covid-themed music videos and become certified in Reiki and 13th Octave LaHoChi. AEA SAG-AFTRA jenanaya.com

JULIA BROTHERS (Tech Week, “Narrator”), she/her. Recent credits include playing Arthur Miller in Jermey Tiang’s Salesman (dir. Michael Leibenluft) in The Rough Draft Festival at LPAC;  Maeve in Dance Nation at SF Playhouse (dir. Becca Wolff); and God in the Kilbane rock opera Weightless (do you see a pattern here?) at Z Space, ACT’s The Strand, and The Public Theatre’s Under The Radar (dir. Becca Wolff). Julia will be performing her commissioned solo piece, The Untitled RFK Project, at SF Playhouse in March 2021, as part of their filmed season. 

JORDAN COVINGTON (Teen Prophet, “Jesus”), he/him, is a bay area actor, singer, dancer, writer and model. He performs for both stage and film productions and is currently signed with MDT Agency in San Francisco. As of late, he has been taking acting classes with Casey Lee in the CL Actor’s Lab. And in the beginning of 2021, he will be taking the big leap and heading to Los Angeles to further pursue his acting career. He lives to entertain, and he thanks PlayGround SF for the many opportunities they have given him.

BLYTHE DE OLIVEIRA FOSTER (Coward’s Flame, “Giselle”), she/her,  has worked with American Conservatory Theater, Berkeley Rep, Aurora Theatre, Shotgun Players, Marin Theatre Company, San Jose Rep, TheatreWorks, Word for Word and foolsFURY. New York credits: Classic Stage Company, The Lion Theatre at Theatre Row, and The Bushwick Starr and Repertorio Español with Caborca. Blythe holds an MFA in Acting from Columbia University. She has taught acting at UC Santa Barbara and currently works with youth in Bay Area public schools. Blythe studied extensively with Kristin Linklater and teaches the Linklater Voice method.

DOUGLAS B. GIORGIS (Welcome to the String, “Red”), he/him,  is so grateful for the opportunity that PlayGround is providing for Actors during this pandemic.  Last seen at PlayGround during the Zoom Fest last summer as both a bee and a praying mantis, but he has been a PlayGround Company Member since the company was formed.  He has been keeping busy doing as many zoom readings as the wonderful Bay Area playwrights invite him to be a part of, working his day jobs (socially distanced…of course) and home schooling his wonderful 3rd and Kindergarten children.

GABBY MOMAH (Sasha and the Angelier, “Sasha”), G/they, is thrilled to be on PlayGround’s virtual stage for the first time! Regional theater credits include Schoolgirls; Or the African Mean Girls Play, Watch Me (Berkeley Rep), Top Girls (ACT), Cardboard Piano (New Conservatory Theater), They/Them (Those Women), Shipping & Handling (Crowded Fire Theater), FLEX (Bay Area Playwrights Festival), and numerous productions with Killing My Lobster and the National Queer Arts Festival. Gabby is a Crowded Fire Resident Artist and has trained at Stanford University, San Francisco Mime Troupe, and The Actors Space. They are currently pursuing their MFA in Acting at Brown / Trinity Rep on occupied Narragansett and Wampanoag land. 

ANNETTE AMELIA OLIVEIRA (Come to Jesús, “Gladys”), she/her. As theatre moved onto Zoom this year, Annette Amelia Oliveira played a medium in Altarena Playhouse’s The Deception of Katherine Vask, a Cuban Mom in a Central Works developmental read of Dreaming in Cuban by Cristina Garcia and a Mexican Abuela in 40, Latino, Single and Gay, a web series by Hector Zavala. Tonight she channels another Latinx lady. Que divertido!

ANEESH SHETH (Tech Week “Mandy”) she/her, is Zooming in from NY! So happy to be back with the folks at PlayGround SF nearly 10 years later! Singer, actress, and Trans activist. Mostly theatre, some TV, and a little film. Find her at aneeshsheth.com for more!

EMILIE TALBOT (Welcome to the String, “Green”), she/her,  is a Bay Area based actor, director, teacher, and voice artist. A PlayGround company member since 2018, she has acted in and directed numerous Monday Night Playgrounds and directed HEDGE for the 2017 New Works Festival. She has appeared on stages across the country and in a number of independent films, plus a whole slew of commercials, industrials, radio dramas, and video games. Her nest was empty for a hot second, but now is full again, which is a really cool thing to come out of a mess of a year. www.emilietalbot.com

ISABEL ANNE TO (Welcome to the String, “Blue”), she/her,  is very happy to have the privilege to keep performing during this pandemic. Most recently she filmed Lauren Gorski’s short play “T.G.I.Effed” for Our Digital Stories: Vol. 4. Over the summer, she participated in the PlayGround Zoom Fest readings of Victoria Chong Der’s Translations and Geetha Reddy’s Safe House. DIRECTORS

TESSA CORRIE (Coward’s Flame), she/her, is a queer and latinx theatre director based in the Bay Area. Her work is grounded in creating space for marginalized and underrepresented communities and narratives. She is a company member and ambassador at PlayGround SF. Her credits include work at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, Center REPertory Company, Hillbarn Theatre, Pear Theatre, Dragon Theatre, Fuse Theatre, TheatreFirst, Shotgun Players, Poltergeist Theatre Projects, PianoFight, and AmiosWest.

JIM KLEINMANN (Tech Week, Artistic Director & Co-Founder), he/him, co-founded PlayGround in 1994, along with playwright Brighde Mullins and director Denise Shama, and has served as Artistic Director since 1996. For PlayGround, he has provided artistic and administrative leadership for the past twenty-four seasons, developing PlayGround’s unique array of new playwright and new play incubator programs, including Monday Night PlayGround, the PlayGround Festival of New Works, the full-length play Commissioning Initiative, the New Play Production Fund, Potrero Stage: PlayGround Center for New Plays, and most recently the Innovator Incubator.  For PlayGround, he has directed more than one hundred short and full-length plays, including works by Garret Jon Groenveld, Aaron Loeb, Geetha Reddy, Lauren Yee, Katie May, and many others. Recent directing and dramaturgy credits include David Steele’s Vignettes on Love and Ruben Grijalva’s Value Over Replacement. He is a veteran arts administrator with more than thirty years of experience, including stints leading Traveling Jewish Theatre, Smuin Ballet and Berkeley Symphony, and received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

ELY SONNY ORQUIZA (Come to Jesús), he/him, is a company member of PlayGround and a freelance theater maker based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through theater and the performing arts Orquiza explores the role of the Asian diaspora, Asian American experience, ancestral ghosts, and the politics of Queer/ness for the American stage. He champions new works by Artists of Color, examines previously untold folklore, and advocates for undiscovered works highlighting multiethnic narrative. He’s so thrilled to be back at PlayGround sharing the virtual space with local talents!

KATJA RIVERA (Sasha and the Angelier), she/her, studied theater at LACC Theatre Academy and Drama Studio London at Berkeley. Bay Area acting credits include  Shotgun Players, Magic Theatre, Theatre Rhinoceros, Center Rep. Directing credits include Shotgun Players, Douglas Morrison, Custom Made, RPE (Danville), SF Playground and TheatreFIRST. She is a proud member of AEA, Shotgun Players and PlayGround.

JEUNÉE SIMON (Teen Prophet), she/her, is an actor and director in the Bay Area. She is thrilled to be directing at Playground, where she is an alumni of their Directing Apprentice Program.

PRODUCTION & STAFF

ALDO BILLINGSLEA (Associate Producer), a long-time PlayGround Company Member, has worked with PlayGround as actor, director, script reader and board member. As an actor, he has worked throughout the Bay with Cal Shakes, TheatreWorks, Marin Theatre Company, Aurora Theatre Company, Center Rep, and Marin Shakespeare. He has served on boards with Arabian Shakespeare, Gritty City Youth Repertory and the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre where he also served as Interim Artistic Director. Aldo is the Father William J. Rewak S.J. Professor of Theatre Arts at Santa Clara University.

SARAH GASSER (Resident Stage Manager & Sound Designer) joined PlayGround in 2017 and has staged managed for the Monday Night PlayGround series and PlayGround Festival. She stagemanages for companies around the Bay Area, including Brava and Bay Area Children’s Theatre. In her administrative capacities, she assists with PlayGround’s marketing, social media, communications, and website, as well as serving as assistant to the Artistic Director.

COLIN JOHNSON (Visual Designer) is a multi-hyphenate production artist who has sullied the grounds of the Bay Area arts since 2008. His work has been produced or featured at PlayGround, Pianofight, The Circus Center Cabaret, San Diego Comic-Con, Image Comics, Potrero Stage, Pint-Sized Plays, The Olympians Festival, Shotz, Shotgun Players, The Curran, and various theatre, radio and film venues throughout the country. He is the Artistic Director of Awesome Theatre, Chief Creative Officer at Troubleshoot Productions and an Instructor / Director / Designer at Circus Center. He makes movies until he gets too frustrated and makes theatre until he has panic attacks.

ANNIE STUART (Associate Artistic Director) has served as casting director for PlayGround for the past twenty-one seasons. In 2005, she was named PlayGround’s first Associate Director, recognizing her increased producing responsibilities, and was recently named Associate Artistic Director. As a freelance casting director, her other credits include Marin Theatre Company, Center REP, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, San Francisco and Los Angeles Shakespeare Festivals, Brava! for Women In The Arts, Theatre Rhinoceros, and Z Space Studio, among others. For the camera, she has cast Falcon Crest, An Inconvenient Woman, Midnight Caller and The Two Mrs. Grenvilles. She has taught at San Jose State University, The Bennett Theatre Lab, Center REP, the College of Marin, Marin Theatre Company and for Theatre Bay Area.

PLAYGROUND, California’s leading playwright incubator, provides unique development opportunities for the Bay Area’s (and now Los Angeles’) best new playwrights, including the monthly Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, annual PlayGround Festival of New Works, full-length play commissions and support for the production of new plays by local playwrights through the New Play Production Fund. To date, PlayGround has supported over 200 early career playwrights, developing and staging more than 850 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and the PlayGround Festival. PlayGround has also commissioned 85 new full-length plays by 55 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative and, through the innovative New Play Production Fund, has directly facilitated the premiere of 30 plays at theatres of every size, including three that have gone on to NYC and other major theater communities. Most recently, PlayGround renovated and relaunched the former Thick House Theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill as Potrero Stage, a state-of-the-art center for new plays, home to PlayGround’s expanding artistic programs and some of the Bay Area’s most distinguished new play developers and producers. Over the past twenty-four years, PlayGround has served to identify some of the most important new local voices for the theatre. PlayGround’s alumni have gone on to win local, national, and international honors for their short and full-length work, including recognition at the Humana Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, New York International Fringe Festival, and others. PlayGround received the 2009 Paine Knickerbocker Award for outstanding contributions to Bay Area theatre, 3 BATCC Awards for Best Original Script for PlayGround commissions, a 2014 National Theatre Company Grant from the American Theatre Wing (founder of the Tony Awards®), and a 2016 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.
