CHRISTMAS EVITA
by Tom Bruett

CHARACTERS

EDGAR, 30s-40s, gay, male, Argentinian/American. He’s trying to fill the void by doing good. Sweet, but can dish it out when he needs to. It’s the first holiday season without his partner.

GEORGE, 70s-80s, gay, male, any ethnicity.  The Scrooge of the nursing home, and just like Scrooge he has a heart inside somewhere. It’s the first holiday season without his partner.

———–

EDGAR is bringing a tray of food into GEORGE’S room. They are at a gay senior nursing home. EDGAR sets the tray down on a table near GEORGE’S chair.

EDGAR

You hungry, George?

GEORGE

What’s it to you?

EDGAR

The nurses said you were crotchety

GEORGE

The nurses can come and suck my crotchety cock.  Tell them that for me.

EDGAR

No.  I’m not going to tell them that.  But thanks for the image. Really appreciate that.

GEORGE

Turn you on?

EDGAR

Those wouldn’t be the words I’d use.  No.

GEORGE

Are you Mexican?

EDGAR

Are you racist?

GEORGE

You look Mexican.

EDGAR

I’m Argentinian. I’m American. My family is from Argentina.

GEORGE

Like Evita?

EDGAR

Don’t cry for me.

GEORGE

I saw the original production.  In New York.  With Patti Lupone.  She was excellent.

EDGAR

I’m jealous.  I’ve only seen her at Musical Mondays.

GEORGE

What’s Musical Mondays?

EDGAR

At the Edge, you know, the bar in the Castro?

GEORGE

Oh honey, it’s been years since I’ve been out in the Castro.

EDGAR

They play clips from musicals all night long. It’s really fun.

GEORGE

More like really gay.

EDGAR

You like theater?

GEORGE

I love musicals. The big, old splashy ones. Samuel and I would go to New York every spring and see all the new musicals.

EDGAR

Was Samuel your husband?

GEORGE

Why are you so nosy?

EDGAR

We don’t have to talk about him, if you don’t want.

GEORGE

He’s dead. It doesn’t matter.

EDGAR

Sorry for your loss.

GEORGE

Here’s a tip.  Don’t get old.  Everybody dies.
