PlayGround Gala Playbill (Sep-2022)

Welcome to the 2022 One PlayGround Gala! This year’s gala celebrates the national scope of PlayGround’s programming in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York City, and, beginning this Fall, Chicago. With the addition of PlayGround-Chicago, Monday Night PlayGround—the signature short play program which has run successfully in the Bay Area for almost 30 years—will be produced in four unique locations by writers and performers in four major theatre hubs.

To celebrate PlayGround’s national presence, and while utilizing PlayGround’s well-honed hybrid model of both in-person and live-streamed performances, the One PlayGround Gala brings together the four companies with gatherings at San Francisco’s Potrero Stage, as well as small and large gatherings throughout the country.

Tonight not only provides us an opportunity to celebrate the impact of two remarkable women from within the PlayGround family, but also features performances by artists from our growing family from San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. An off-topic Christmas ad will help everyone save on their favorite gifts, too.  This cohesion serves as PlayGround’s proof of concept as we continue to create even more opportunities for working artists across the country and establish a national network for this country’s most promising new voices and their artistic collaborators.

Thank you for joining us and being a part of this moment and movement!

Fund-a-Need Auction

We’re excited to announce that this year’s Fund-a-Need auction will directly support the more than 700 artists who will participate in the 2022-23 Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series — in the SF Bay Area, Los Angeles, NYC and Chicago — helping to uplift new voices for the American Theatre, particularly those historically excluded.

Our goal: to raise $25,000 on September 19 in support of artist compensation for one year of Monday Night PlayGround in four theatre hubs and, ideally, to raise $125,000 to sustain these efforts for the next five years. To achieve this goal, we are reaching out to the PlayGround community for tax-deductible donations at varying levels: $50, $125, $250, $500, $1250, $2500, and $5000 for each year. Gala attendees can raise their paddles and bid at multiple levels and naming opportunities are available for pledges starting at $5,000 per year.

Estimated Value: Priceless
Starting Bid: $2,500

Tonight’s Honorees

Regina Guggenheim is a native Texan who received her undergraduate degree from Carleton College and her MFA from the Yale School of Drama, where she first met classmate, Jim Kleinmann. Prior to settling in the Bay Area, she worked as an assistant general manager on Broadway, as well as stage and production manager from Madison Square Garden to a variety of tours/productions throughout the United States and Canada. Regina spent two decades at Broadway San Francisco, serving as Vice President of Production and Theatre Operations. She was a proud part of a leadership team that grew BSF from an $80MM theater company to a $200MM premier entertainment provider, prior to its purchase by ATG in 2021. She also served as line producer for their in-house events, bringing artists from Neil Degrasse Tyson to Sting BSF stages. Regina had the honor and delight to serve on the PlayGround board as both a member and its first chair. It has been a privilege to watch PlayGround’s growth, from bringing on Jim as a full-time staff to our home at Potrero Stage to the incredible new programs that have made PlayGround a local hub and national presence. Regina is currently working for KFF, an endowed, nonprofit organization filling the need for trusted, independent information on national health issues.

Annie Stuart served as casting director for PlayGround for the past 24 seasons and in 2005 was named Associate Director, eventually becoming Associate Artistic Director. With PlayGround, Annie contributed to every aspect of the artistic development of the company including the PlayGround films, the script evaluations and publications, the expansion into LA and New York, and her favorite in-house program, Recess. She often followed the development of playwrights and cast their plays in other venues and premiere productions. As a freelance casting director, her other credits include Marin Theatre Company, SF Playhouse. Center REP, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, San Francisco and Los Angeles Shakespeare Festivals, Brava!, Theatre Rhinoceros, and Z Space, among others. For more than two decades, Annie has cast over 300 roles per season on behalf of PlayGround, making her one of the most active casting directors in the Bay Area.

To date, PlayGround has supported over 250 early career playwrights, developing and staging more than 1000 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and the PlayGround Festival. PlayGround has also commissioned 90 new full-length plays by 60 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative and, through the innovative New Play Production Fund, has directly facilitated the premiere of 34 plays at theatres of every size, including three that have gone on to NYC and other major theater communities. Most recently, PlayGround renovated and relaunched the former Thick House Theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill as Potrero Stage, a state-of-the-art center for new plays, home to PlayGround’s expanding artistic programs and some of the Bay Area’s most distinguished new play developers and producers. Over the past twenty-four years, PlayGround has served to identify some of the most important new local voices for the theatre. PlayGround’s alumni have gone on to win local, national, and international honors for their short and full-length work, including recognition at the Humana Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, New York International Fringe Festival, and others. PlayGround received the 2009 Paine Knickerbocker Award for outstanding contributions to Bay Area theatre, 3 BATCC Awards for Best Original Script for PlayGround commissions, a 2014 National Theatre Company Grant from the American Theatre Wing (founder of the Tony Awards®), and a 2016 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.
