Innovators Showcase 2020 – Featuring The Moonrisers
Through the Innovator Incubator, PlayGround supports the launch of brand-new artist-driven innovative theatre companies and the development of innovative new works for the stage. This year-long intensive program culminates in an annual new works festival, the Innovators Showcase. This year, we have taken the opportunity of digital theater in a pandemic age and expanded our programming to allow all our second year cohort the chance to produce and present their own projects of whatever scope they pleased. Resultantly, this year’s 2020 Innovator Showcase is a robust three weeks of live-streamed performance, developmental readings, digital web series, and live panels on artistry and activism all free to watch from the comfort of your home!
In this post, we feature The Moonrisers and the debut of their new play Baboons in the Nighthouse by Christopher Magee.
Moonrisers is dedicated to creating new works featuring the bizarre, the magical, and the surreal, that joyously celebrate escapism and embrace comedy of the absurd. To never linger overlong on a success but hurtle forward with new, exciting projects. To plant a seed of levity in our audience that can be carried and shared with others, in abundance. The Moonrisers seek to celebrate the Bay Area’s vibrant theater community and draw audiences out of the ordinary and into a magical world, just outside of their awareness, maybe missed or forgotten. To demonstrate that if looked for, if sought after, the world reveals phantasms, waking dreams, and fairy tales.
Continuing their tradition of mind-bending and imaginative storytelling through worlds eerily like and unlike our own, Baboons in the Nighthouse is a premiere production of a staged reading of a new in development script. The Moonrisers invite the audience into the process of their process to process, together but physically very apart, a table reading of this new offering. Who are the baboons? What are they doing in the Nighthouse? What is a Nighthouse? All of these questions and more may or may not be answered. But in all pseudo-seriousness, this fully rehearsed and staged performance is a metatheatrical examination of a group of performers preparing for an oncoming staged reading. Tune in to unravel the mysteries of the Baboons in the Nighthouse!
