3Girls Theatre’s 2025 New Works Festival celebrates fresh new plays by women+ playwrights whose work has been in development through 3GT’s Reading Series. The festival runs from March 7–16 at KALW, 220 Montgomery Street, SF, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Featured PlayGrounders include Kristy Lin Billuni, whose eco-homo-erotic musical The Trees will be presented on March 9. Natalia Delgado will perform in La Mamá Chingona on March 7. Miyoko Sakatani, Sakura Nakahara, Randy Lee, and Zoe Chien will appear in In the Shadow of Mt. Fuji on March 14. Katja Rivera, Louel Senores, and L. Duarte will perform in AC/DC on March 15. Robert Sicular joins Bay Area acting legends Jarion Monroe and Anni Long in a live reading of The Crime Wave at Blandings by P.G. Wodehouse. The event takes place on Monday, March 3, at 7 p.m. at the Berkeley City Club. Admission is free, with donations welcome.

Cindy Goldfield is currently in rehearsals for Happy Pleasant Valley, a new sex-scandal-murder-mystery musical set in a retirement community. The show is a co-production between TheatreWorks, running March 5–30, and CenterRep, running June 3–29. More info and tickets here.

Rachel Bublitz is excited as the national tour of Funny, Like an Abortion! continues! The next production opens on March 14 in Chicago, co-produced by Chicago Danztheatre and Fat Theater Project. More info & tickets here.

Emilie Talbot will direct Copenhagen by Michael Frayn for the SPARC Science@Play Series, running March 14–16. More info & tickets here.

Ben Chau-Chiu is directing a staged reading of Two Sisters and a Piano by Nilo Cruz at Oakland Theater Project. Readings will take place on Saturday, March 15, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 16, at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Ely Sonny Orquiza is directing Perfect Arrangement at Sonoma State University, running March 6–9 at the Person Theatre (more info & tickets here). Later this month, he will helm The Window Affair by Anne Yumi Kobori as part of Town Hall Theatre’s Spotlight New American Plays (SNAP) Festival in Lafayette, taking place March 21–23, 2025 (more info & tickets here).

Wayne Wong appears in The Magic Flute with the Handel Opera Project in Berkeley on Sunday, March 23. More info & tickets here.

Playwrights Foundation and San Francisco Playhouse will present a reading of The Justice Is Just Asleep, a new black comedy set at the U.S. Supreme Court by PF Resident Playwright and PlayGround alum Ruben Grijalva. The first public reading takes place on Monday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at San Francisco Playhouse.

Ross Peter Nelson’s theatre company, Raven’s Feather Productions, will present The Children by Lucy Kirkwood, opening on March 28, 2025.

Robyn Brooks’ one-act play, Tales of a Baby Dyke in a Smoking Jacket, directed by Eileen Grady, will receive a staged reading at Ross Valley Players – RVP New Works on March 30 at 7 p.m. The play, described as “a playwright in existential crisis—cue the champagne,” promises to be a must-see. Stan Stone’s dramatic play Trouble The Water will be produced as part of the Afro Solo Arts Festival. The play is one of two productions addressing police stops of people of color. More info & tickets here.

Michael Barrett Austin recently received a BATCC award nomination for Best Featured Performance in Fallen Angels at The Aurora Theatre and just completed the second workshop of The Bridge, a new musical by Patricia Cotter and The Kilbanes at Marin Theatre.

Greg Lam’s play Chaplin and Keaton on the Set of Limelight at The Pear Theatre has been nominated for Best Entire Production (99 seats and under) by the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards for 2025.

Lizzie Calogero will play Sister Walter in Buttercup, a Prussian War farce by JD Murphy, directed by Nancy Carlin. The production runs April 3–13 at Marin Shakespeare Company’s 4th Street Theatre. More info & tickets here.
