Biographies

PLAYWRIGHTS

MONIQUE HAFEN ADAMS (Les Gueules Cassées), she/ her, is thrilled to be back at MNP. She had readings of her short plays, Ella at the Houston Philharmonic and Gently Down, during her first year in Playground’s writers’ pool. Gently Down went on to receive a fully realized production for The Best of Playground 26. Adams also had her short play, The Canterbury Fails, presented in New York at the Atlantic Acting School, and a full length version of The Canterbury Fails had a reading with ARC. New to writing, Adams can usually be seen on stage. Acting credits include productions at ACT, Theatreworks, SF Playhouse, San Jose Stage Company, or Center REP, among others.

JUSTIN P. LOPEZ (Imposter), he/him, is an actor, singer, writer, and boba-milk-tea enthusiast, who seeks true connection and humanity in each script and song. Recent acting credits include the world premieres of Kiss My Aztec! (Berkeley Repertory Theatre) and Unbreakable by Andrew Lippa (SFGMC). As a writer, Justin’s work has been featured by several theatres in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City. His new play, The Re-Education of Fernando Morales, was a finalist for the 2021 Bay Area Playwrights Festival. Find out what else Justin is up to at www.justinplopez.com.

BRIDGETTE DUTTA PORTMAN (Gallows Humor), she/her, is a playwright, author, and teacher. Dozens of her plays have been read and produced locally, across the country, and overseas, and she is currently at work on a young adult fantasy novel series. She sits on the board of the Pear Theatre and teaches creative writing and composition at UC Berkeley.

MARISSA SKUDLAREK (A Stitch in Time), she/her, full-length plays include You’ll Not Feel the Drowning (Custom Made Theatre workshop, 2017), Pleiades (No Nude Men, 2014), Juana, or The Greater Glory (Loud & Unladylike Festival, 2016), Deus ex Machina (Young Playwrights Festival National Competition winner, 2006), and The Rose of Youth (Vassar College, 2008). Her shorter plays have been commissioned and staged by EXIT Theatre, the San Francisco Olympians Festival, PianoFight, and more. ETEYA TRINIDAD (When the Stars Whisper), she/her, is a playwright, stage manager, and theater artist. She is a resident playwright at PlayGround and a member of the 2021 LezWritesBTQ Cohort at 3 Girls Theatre. Her writing has been recognized in the 2021 Best of PlayGround Festival with the June Anne Baker Prize, and as a finalist for the 2019 Bay Area Playwrights Festival. Her work has also been seen at Berklee College of Music, SF Olympians Festival, Ross Valley Players, and Amios West, among others. www.eteyatrinidad.com

MAURY ZEFF‘s (The Extraordinary, Ordinary Ones), he/him, work has been performed around the US and in Europe, and published in American Fiction, Crab Orchard Review, Southern California Review, and elsewhere. His plays have appeared in the 2014 and 2017 Best of PlayGround festivals and won four PlayGround audience awards. He has received playwriting commissions and fellowships from PlayGround, SF Olympians, and the SF Writers Grotto, where he works and teaches. He won the 2021 Clark-Gross Award in the Novel and was nominated for a 2020 Pushcart Prize in fiction. Maury earned an MFA in writing from the University of San Francisco.

DAVID CRAMER (The Extraordinary, Ordinary Ones, “Troublefinger”), he/him, has been a company member since 2009 and has performed on stage and film, including roles on M*A*S*H, The Waltons, Nash Bridges among others. Local stage appearances include The Magic Theatre, Marin Theatre Company and Shotgun Players.

CHRISTIANO DELGADO (The Extraordinary, Ordinary Ones, “Sliprock”), he/ him, is super excited to be returning to the playground! He most recently closed Follies at SF Playhouse, and will be in barking on a Journey with The Presidio theatre in their Panto of Sleeping Beauty! Chachi is a native to the Bay and currently resides in Berkeley. He would love to thank you for coming and hopes you enjoy!

LIVIA GOMES DEMARCHI (The Extraordinary, Ordinary Ones, “Shakefries”), she/her, is thrilled to be back to Monday Night Playground! Recent credits: Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing with SF Shakes, Cassandra in Somewhere by Marisela Treviño Orta at Perspective Theater, Miri in Sapience at Playground SF and San Diego Rep Latinx festival, and Lola in the world premiere of Ghosts of Bogotá at AlterTheater, Tania in Native Gardens at Center Rep, and Olivia/Maria in Twelfth Night also with Perspective Theater. She was also a part of the original production of The River Bride as Belmira at Alter Theater Ensemble. Other companies: SF Playhouse, Magic Theater, Marin Shakespeare, Playwrights Foundation, BRAVA, Shotgun Players, among others. She holds a B.A. in Theater and performance studies from UC Berkeley.

ROSIE HALLETT (A Stitch in Time, “Meg”), she/her, was recently seen in the PlayGround production of Rachel Bublitz’s Funny, Like an Abortion. She has been a PlayGround company member for many years and is the recipient of the Women Leaders Fellowship for Acting.

DIANA LAUREN JONES (A Stitch in Time, “Alicia”), she/her, is excited to make her PLAYGROUND debut! She has worked commercially, off-Broadway, in regional theater, and in voice-over and independent film. She is originally from New Jersey and currently lives in Alameda. She earned a B.F.A from Mason Gross School Of The Arts and trained/performed at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London. Diana also holds a Masters in Public Administration, has lived in Mozambique and loves to swim. Recent Bay Area work and appearances include ZSpace Theater (Young Writers of Color Festival), The Marsh (Online SoloFest) The Alameda Comedy Club and The Aurora (Bay Area Women’s Theater Festival).

SARAH LEE (When the Stars Whisper, “Leia”), she/her, has worked with Pacifica Spindrift Players, Silicon Valley Shakespeare, AE of Berkeley and Berkeley Shakespeare Company. She is thrilled to be joining PlayGround for their opening night. When not acting, she works as a nurse practitioner and has her life dictated by her cat Timothy.

JULIA MCNEAL (Les Gueules Cassées, “Anna Coleman Ladd”), she/her, Bay Area credits: Berkeley Rep, A.C.T., Magic Theatre, Shotgun Players, Aurora Theatre, San Francisco Playhouse, Pacific Alliance Theatre, Actors Theatre of San Francisco, and PlayGround. Film/TV: The Unbelievable Truth; Flesh and Bone; Law and Order; Law & Order: SVU. Julia is a proud member of ARC and of the PlayGround Company. BACILIO MENDEZ II (When the Stars Whisper, “Jake”) he/him, is not the one.

KAREN OFFEREINS (Gallows Humor, “Lisa”), she/her, is a company member of PlayGround and was last seen on stage in Ferocious Lotus’ EVOLUTION. Recent credits include Custom Made Theatre’s How to Transcend a Happy Marriage, having previously performed there in The Pain and the Itch and M. Butterfly, Elevada at Shotgun Players (as well as The Mousetrap, Top Girls, and Our Town), Two Mile Hollow (Ferocious Lotus, where she is also a company member), and Phèdre (Cutting Ball Theater). Past credits include The Potrero Nuevo Project (PlayGround), The Rules (SF Playhouse), and Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Big Funk, and No Exit (AtmosTheatre).

KRYSTLE PIAMONTE (Gallows Humor, “Mia”), she/her, is a stage/screen actor based in the Bay Area! Theatre includes: RIPPED (Z Space); KING OF THE YEES and DANCE NATION (SF Playhouse); INSIDE OUT & BACK AGAIN (BACT); and TWO MILE HOLLOW (Ferocious Lotus). Film/TV include: SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, BOUND 4 HEAVEN, and LUMPIA WITH A VENGEANCE. She is a 2x TBA Award Finalist for Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role in a Play and was named an MVP of Bay Area Theatre by KQED. REBECCA PINGREE (When the Stars Whisper, “Tiff”), she/her, opens Into the Woods at Berkeley Playhouse this weekend, playing The Baker’s Wife. She’s a regular Director/Performer at Mask Mondays at Standard Deviant, and is currently developing Bud & This is Not Moose & Tweety with Analog Theatre (which she co-founded with Elissa Beth Stebbins) which will be featured as part on Playground’s Innovator Incubator Showcase in the coming weeks. Rebecca holds an MFA in Collaborative Theatremaking from Rose Bruford, and is a proud member of PlayGround, TBA, TheatreFirst’s T1 Collective, and BAARJ (Bay Area Artists for Racial Justice). NICK TRENGOVE (Les Gueules Cassées, “Jean-Pierre DuBoix”), he/him, is a Bay Area-based actor, director, and teacher. He has also performed in the Chicago storefront theater scene and holds an MFA in Performance from the Theatre School at DePaul University. His recent acting credits include Aunt Jack at NCTC and A Small Fire at Shotgun Players.

CHRISTIAN WILBURN (Impostor, “Nick”), he/him, is a Bay Area actor, who graduated with BA in Theater and Dance from Santa Clara University. Professionally, he’s performed at Monday Night PlayGround, PlayGround Zoom Fest and PianoFight. He has also done workshop readings as a part of Potrero Stage, Marin Theatre Company, and Berkeley Rep. He is a PlayGround Resident Playwright and his new full-length play, Starlight, will premiere at the 2023 PlayGround Festival of New Works.

DIRECTORS

TESSA CORRIE (The Extraordinary, Ordinary Ones), she/her, s a Queer and Latinx theater director based in the Bay Area. Her work is grounded in creating space for marginalized and underrepresented communities and narratives. She is a company member, casting associate, and this year’s Women Leaders Directing Fellow at PlayGround SF. Her credits include work at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, Center REPertory Company, Palo Alto Players, Hillbarn Theatre, Pear Theatre, Shotgun Players, TheatreFirst, The Playwrights’ Center of San Francisco, More Más Marami Arts, Poltergeist Theatre Project, PianoFight, AmiosWest, and Our Digital Stories.

NORMAN GEE (Les Gueules Cassées), he/him, was seen onstage with WATER BY THE SPOONFUL at SF Playhouse and GREAT EXPECTATIONS at San Jose Stage. He performs next May 9th in IMOGEN SAYS NOTHING w/ SF Shakes, and will be directing COMPARED TO WHAT by local playwright Judith Offer at the Masquers Playhouse this August 2022. Norman is also an Associate Producer with PlayGround, and regularly directs in the Monday Night PlayGround.

MOLLIE NOBLE (When the Stars Whisper), she/her, is always thrilled to return to work with her PlayGround family. A Bay Area born actor, director and teacher, she has worked in New York, Boston, Chicago, London and almost literally in her own backyard under the redwoods with Porchlight Theatre Company. DOYLE OTT (Gallows Humor), he/him, has performed, directed and taught with companies including Make A Circus, Splash Circus Theatre, Prescott Circus, Playground, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, San Francisco Circus Center, Antenna Theatre, Golden Thread, and the San Francisco Playwright’s Foundation, As Artistic Director at Children’s Fairyland in Oakland he has overseen the creation of two new performance spaces, written and directed over 30 plays, and developed Fairyland’s professional Theatre for the Very Young. A member of Actors Equity and a certified Feldenkrais practitioner. Doyle h lectures in theatre and dance at Sonoma State University, where he is currently directing Eurydice at Sonoma State.

JIM KLEINMANN (A Stitch in Time; Artistic Director & Co-Founder), he/him, co-founded PlayGround in 1994, along with playwright Brighde Mullins and director Denise Shama, and has served as Artistic Director since 1996. For PlayGround, he has provided artistic and administrative leadership for the past twenty-four seasons, developing PlayGround’s unique array of new playwright and new play incubator programs, including Monday Night PlayGround, the PlayGround Festival of New Works, the full-length play Commissioning Initiative, the New Play Production Fund, Potrero Stage: PlayGround Center for New Plays, and most recently the Innovator Incubator. For PlayGround, he has directed more than one hundred short and full-length plays, including works by Garret Jon Groenveld, Aaron Loeb, Geetha Reddy, Lauren Yee, Katie May, and many others. Recent directing and dramaturgy credits include David Steele’s Vignettes on Love and Ruben Grijalva’s Value Over Replacement. He is a veteran arts administrator with more than thirty years of experience, including stints leading Traveling Jewish Theatre, Smuin Ballet and Berkeley Symphony, and received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

EMILIE TALBOT (Impostor), she/they, is a Bay Area based actor, director, teacher, and voice artist. A longtime PlayGround company member, she has acted in and directed numerous Monday Night Playgrounds, currently serves on the Board, and directed HEDGE for the 2017 New Works Festival. She has appeared on stages across the country, in a whole slew of commercials, industrials, radio dramas, and video games and a smattering of independent films. JAMES GOODE (Sound Designer), he/him, is a sound designer, composer, audio engineer, musician, and songwriter based in the Bay Area. He’s collaborated with actors, animators, visual artists, writers, and other musicians and composers on a wide variety of projects, including films, gallery and museum installations, live performances, music videos, podcasts, and radio dramas. DIANNE HARRISON (Stage Manager), she/her, was born and raised in Sonoma Valley and performed in children’s theatre before shifting to stage management. Some of her past shows include Sonoma Arts Live’s Same Time, Next Year; Santa Rosa Junior College’s Legally Blonde: The Musical and Almost, Maine, which earned a Certificate of Merit from the Kennedy Center’s American College Theater Festival; JoLee Productions’ Bluff, which she also co-directed; and Ross Valley Players’ Silent Sky and Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily. She is thrilled to be a part of Monday Night PlayGround.

LAUREL SCHWEIDEL (Box Office), she/they, is a Bay Area native who loves to teach and perform. She graduated from UC Irvine with a BA in Drama and has taught improvisation, music, and songwriting through Bay Area Children’s Theater, the Willard Metal Shop Theater, and Leap Arts in Education. Laurel also MC’s concerts with Sofar Sound and releases original music under the name Laurel Hannah.

PLAYGROUND, California’s leading playwright incubator, provides unique development opportunities for the Bay Area’s, Los Angeles’ and now New York’s best new playwrights, including the monthly Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, annual PlayGround Festival of New Works, full-length play commissions and support for the production of new plays by local playwrights through the New Play Production Fund. To date, PlayGround has supported over 250 early career playwrights, developing and staging more than 1000 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and the PlayGround Festival. PlayGround has also commissioned 90 new full-length plays by 60 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative and, through the innovative New Play Production Fund, has directly facilitated the premiere of 34 plays at theatres of every size, including three that have gone on to NYC and other major theater communities. Most recently, PlayGround renovated and relaunched the former Thick House Theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill as Potrero Stage, a state-of-the-art center for new plays, home to PlayGround’s expanding artistic programs and some of the Bay Area’s most distinguished new play developers and producers. Over the past twenty-four years, PlayGround has served to identify some of the most important new local voices for the theatre. PlayGround’s alumni have gone on to win local, national, and international honors for their short and full-length work, including recognition at the Humana Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, New York International Fringe Festival, and others.
