BIOGRAPHIES
PLAYWRIGHTS
AARON HIGAREDA (The Legend of the Rhino), he/him, is an emerging playwright from southern California. He worked for Berkeley Repertory Theater and Shotgun Players as a House Manager for the 2019-2020 short-lived season, and is currently working with PlayGround-SF as a Box Office Manager. He was also the 2018-2019 Marketing Fellow at American Conservatory Theater. Aaron has had workshop productions with CASA 0101 and El Teatro Campesino. He holds a B.A. in Theater: Writing for the Performing arts from the University of California, Riverside, and applied to M.F.A. playwriting programs for the fall of 2021!
AKAINA GHOSH (Blended Histories), they/them, is a non-binary playwright, director, and performer. They received 3Girls Theatre’s “Innovator’s Series” grant for two consecutive years, debuting full-length original works at Z-Below and The Rathskeller Club. In 2019 they completed a Writing Fellowship with SF’s renowned sketch comedy company, Killing My Lobster. This is their fourth season in PlayGround’s Writer’s Pool!
LAUREN GORSKI (The Memory Bank), she/her, is an award-winning writer and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Exposition Review. She writes fiction, poetry, screenplays, and stageplays. Her plays have been performed for the Hollywood Fringe, PlayGround, PianoFight’s ShortLived series, and more. She is a past playwright-in-residence with PlayGround San Francisco. Her new rom com Zoom play “While You Were In Quarantine” will be debuting on February 13 on a computer screen near you. Learn more here: bit.ly/WYWIQ
CHRIS STEELE (Zagriate), they/them, is a queer trans-nonbinary performance artist, writer, activist, and horror enthusiast. Their work centers on highlighting queer narratives throughout history and combating bigotry and white supremacy. They’re a co-founder of Poltergeist Theatre Project: a queer theater collective, and their award-winning drag personas Polly Amber Ross/Peter Pansexual can be found on instagram @pollyandpeter.
ETEYA TRINIDAD (La Planchada), she/her, is a playwright, stage manager, and theater artist. Her full-length play, La Sirena, was recognized as a finalist for the 2019 Bay Area Playwrights Festival and received a staged reading at Ross Valley Players last fall. She wrote and directed her first play, La Mestiza’s Colors, with the College Players at the University of San Francisco in 2017. Since then, her work has been seen at San Francisco Olympians Festival, Amios West, 3Girls Theatre, and Theatre is the Cure, among others. This is her first year with the PlayGround Writers Pool.
LEELA VELAUTHAM (Curry and Crumpets), she/her, is originally from the UK and a graduate student at UC Berkeley studying towards a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. She was featured in the Best of PlayGround 2020 and won the 2011 University of Oxford’s New Writing Festival with her play Schroedinger’s Hat. She is also a current member of the 2020-21 PlayGround Playwright Residency Program.

MICHAEL J. ASBERRY (The Memory Bank, “Mo” ), he/him, most recently appeared in Las Meninas with Profile Theater (Portland, OR). He’s also performed with the San Francisco Mime Troupe; Best of Playground Festival – Zoomfest; Aurora Theatre Company; Sacramento Theatre Company; Capital Stage Company; San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Pacific Conservatory Theatre; TheatreWorks; Shotgun Theater and the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre. Film and television credits include “San Andreas” (Warner Brothers); “Chance” (Hulu); “Trauma” (NBC); “Nash Bridges” (CBS) and voiceover for Pixar Animation, Clorox, Pine Sol and the video game, “Watchdogs 2.” Michael is a proud member of SAG/AFTRA and Actors Equity Association.
HUGO E. CARBAJAL (La Planchada, “Ramon”), he/him, has been a theatre artist for over 20 years. An actor, director, and teacher. Served as a performer educator with Educational Theatre at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland for 8 years. He has also worked with companies such as Cal Shakes, Hartford Stage, Huntington Theatre, The Alley, SF Mime Troupe, Shotgun Players, Cuttingball Theatre, TeatroVision, and others. Currently an online professor of drama at Los Medanos College and CSU Chanel Islands. Currently pursuing a career on TV and Film in Los Angeles. Look for him on shows like “SWAT,” “Good Girls,” “Brooklyn Nine Nine,” and more.
DEAN KOYA (Curry and Crumpets, “Ashwathama”), he/him, was born and raised in Fiji and received his BA in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been a proud and grateful member of the Bay Area acting community since 2015. His credits include “Arcadia” at Shotgun Players, “Non Player Character” at SF Playhouse, “The Farm” at TheatreFIRST, “All My Sons” at Role Players Ensemble, “Scenes from *71 Years” at Golden Thread Productions and “Universal Robots” at Quantum Dragon Theatre. He is currently enrolled in Acting Masterclass at Seydways Acting Studios.

PATRICK KELLY JONES (Curry and Crumpets, “King Arthur”), he/him, has been performing with PlayGround since 2011. He’s acted on stages all over the SF Bay Area and the country. JENNY NGUYEN NELSON (Blended Histories, “Mom”), she/her, is thrilled to be back reading with PlayGround SF. She is a second year MFA student at Brown/Trinity Rep. In the Bay Area, she has been seen performing with Cal Shakes, Killing My Lobster, and Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor. She thanks her husband for his endless support of her dreams. Enjoy the show!
ALICIA MASON (The Memory Bank, “Ayesha”), she/her, is a Bay Area actor, daughter, partner and diligent cat mom. She was raised by parents who served in the military and a mother who was a clinical psychologist, who taught her the value of understanding all that encompasses the human experience. Her goal and mission as an actor is to tell stories that move and transform the audience and highlight the communities of color she grew up in.
CARLA PANTOJA (La Planchada, “La Planchada”), she/her, was born and raised in the South Bay. She is an actor, fight director, teaching artist, and mom of two. In 2020 she was in the acting company at Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She is a resident artist with San Francisco Shakespeare Festival and Member Representative on Dueling Arts International’s board.

STEPHANIE PRENTICE (The Legend of the Rhino, “Maggy Ramirez”) is a Bay Area native, AEA member, and serves as the casting director for TheatreFirst in Berkeley. In addition to being a proud PlayGround company member, Stephanie is also a member of the PlayGround Board, and co-chair of the PlayGround Ambassadors. Her kids are the BEST.
EZRA REAVES (Zagriate, “Dino”), they/them, is a non-binary actor, performer, comedian, singer and experimental theater artist. They’ve toured nationally and internationally with The Neo-Futurists, performed over 150 shows as the lead character in the immersive show The Speakeasy and have performed locally at Magic, Shotgun, NCTC, ACT, and SF Playhouse. As a comedian, Ezra has opened for Janeane Garofalo, Bob Odenkirk, John Hodgman, Paul F. Tompkins and even shared the stage with Michael Ian Black at SF Sketchfest. LUCINDA SERRANO (The Legend of the Rhino, “Rachel Hernandez”), she/her, has performed with many Bay Area theatre companies such as: Theatreworks, Pacific Repertory Theatre and PlayGround. Though she is currently sheltering-in-place in Tuscon, Arizona, she is a commercial actor (tv & film) in Los Angeles where she shares a home with her pitbull, Casper.

DANE TROY, (Blended Histories, “Dad”), he/him, is thankful to Monday Night PlayGround for this opportunity. Dane is a performance artist from the heart of Atlanta, Georgia. He has studied improvisational & sketch comedy at iO Chicago, iO West, The Groundlings, The Second City: Hollywood & UCB: LA. Dane was a performer/writer in the 2018 CBS Diversity Showcase in LA. SUSI DAMILANO (Zagriat), she/her, is co-founder and producing director of the San Francisco Playhouse. She has been honored and delighted to create and play with the talented actors and playwrights here at PlayGround. This Spring, she is excited to direct her second world premiere by Ruben Grijalva-Shoot Me When-who she met through Jim and Annie and PlayGround.
KATHERINE HAMILTON (The Legend of the Rhino)
JIM KLEINMANN (Curry and Crumpets; Artistic Director & Co-Founder), he/him, co-founded PlayGround in 1994, along with playwright Brighde Mullins and director Denise Shama, and has served as Artistic Director since 1996. For PlayGround, he has provided artistic and administrative leadership for the past twenty-four seasons, developing PlayGround’s unique array of new playwright and new play incubator programs, including Monday Night PlayGround, the PlayGround Festival of New Works, the full-length play Commissioning Initiative, the New Play Production Fund, Potrero Stage: PlayGround Center for New Plays, and most recently the Innovator Incubator. For PlayGround, he has directed more than one hundred short and full-length plays, including works by Garret Jon Groenveld, Aaron Loeb, Geetha Reddy, Lauren Yee, Katie May, and many others. Recent directing and dramaturgy credits include David Steele’s Vignettes on Love and Ruben Grijalva’s Value Over Replacement. He is a veteran arts administrator with more than thirty years of experience, including stints leading Traveling Jewish Theatre, Smuin Ballet and Berkeley Symphony, and received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.
BRENDAN SIMON (La Planchada), he/him, was born and raised in the Bay Area, is a creative and performing artist, and a proud AEA member. He is the incoming Artistic Director for TheatreFirst. He is also the Learning and Development Lead for Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre, directing regional and national TYA and health-based theatre programming since 2001. In 2017, he was the recipient of Kaiser Permanente’s Community Health Award for building national resiliency programming. He is also a graduate of the Inaugural Lincoln Center Education Teaching Artist Training Program in New York. Brendan is half of Belle Award-winning musical theatre team Michael and Simon.

M. GRAHAM SMITH (Blended Histories), is a freelance director based in San Francisco. His upcoming projects include A hip hop musical adaptation of AS YOU LIKE it with ACT’s MFA students available as a video capture performance in April. And Jonathan Luskin’s PERFECT as part of PlayGround’s Festival in May.

ALDO BILLINGSLEA (Associate Producer), a long-time PlayGround Company Member, has worked with PlayGround as actor, director, script reader and board member. As an actor, he has worked throughout the Bay with Cal Shakes, TheatreWorks, Marin Theatre Company, Aurora Theatre Company, Center Rep, and Marin Shakespeare. He has served on boards with Arabian Shakespeare, Gritty City Youth Repertory and the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre where he also served as Interim Artistic Director. Aldo is the Father William J. Rewak S.J. Professor of Theatre Arts at Santa Clara University.
SARAH GASSER (Resident Stage Manager & Sound Designer) joined PlayGround in 2017 and has staged managed for the Monday Night PlayGround series and PlayGround Festival. She stagemanages for companies around the Bay Area, including Brava and Bay Area Children’s Theatre. In her administrative capacities, she assists with PlayGround’s marketing, social media, communications, and website, as well as serving as assistant to the Artistic Director.
COLIN JOHNSON (Visual Designer) is a multi-hyphenate production artist who has sullied the grounds of the Bay Area arts since 2008. His work has been produced or featured at PlayGround, Pianofight, The Circus Center Cabaret, San Diego Comic-Con, Image Comics, Potrero Stage, Pint-Sized Plays, The Olympians Festival, Shotz, Shotgun Players, The Curran, and various theatre, radio and film venues throughout the country. He is the Artistic Director of Awesome Theatre, Chief Creative Officer at Troubleshoot Productions and an Instructor / Director / Designer at Circus Center. He makes movies until he gets too frustrated and makes theatre until he has panic attacks.
ANNIE STUART (Associate Artistic Director) has served as casting director for PlayGround for the past twenty-one seasons. In 2005, she was named PlayGround’s first Associate Director, recognizing her increased producing responsibilities, and was recently named Associate Artistic Director. As a freelance casting director, her other credits include Marin Theatre Company, Center REP, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, San Francisco and Los Angeles Shakespeare Festivals, Brava! for Women In The Arts, Theatre Rhinoceros, and Z Space Studio, among others. For the camera, she has cast Falcon Crest, An Inconvenient Woman, Midnight Caller and The Two Mrs. Grenvilles. She has taught at San Jose State University, The Bennett Theatre Lab, Center REP, the College of Marin, Marin Theatre Company and for Theatre Bay Area.
PLAYGROUND, California’s leading playwright incubator, provides unique development opportunities for the Bay Area’s (and now Los Angeles’) best new playwrights, including the monthly Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, annual PlayGround Festival of New Works, full-length play commissions and support for the production of new plays by local playwrights through the New Play Production Fund. To date, PlayGround has supported over 200 early career playwrights, developing and staging more than 850 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and the PlayGround Festival. PlayGround has also commissioned 85 new full-length plays by 55 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative and, through the innovative New Play Production Fund, has directly facilitated the premiere of 30 plays at theatres of every size, including three that have gone on to NYC and other major theater communities. Most recently, PlayGround renovated and relaunched the former Thick House Theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill as Potrero Stage, a state-of-the-art center for new plays, home to PlayGround’s expanding artistic programs and some of the Bay Area’s most distinguished new play developers and producers. Over the past twenty-four years, PlayGround has served to identify some of the most important new local voices for the theatre. PlayGround’s alumni have gone on to win local, national, and international honors for their short and full-length work, including recognition at the Humana Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, New York International Fringe Festival, and others.
