BIOGRAPHIES
PLAYWRIGHTS
AKAINA GHOSH (A Modern Odyssey), they/them, Akaina Ghosh is a non-binary, Indian Playwright, Director, and Performer. They’ve debuted works at PianoFight, Z-Below, TheatreFIRST, and The Flight Deck. They’re passionate about reconstructing historically significant narratives through a gender expansive lens, generating new works that center queer voices and perspectives. This is their fourth season in PlayGround’s Writer’s Pool!
AMISSA MILLER (Refusal of the Call), she/her, is a writer, dramaturg, and educator. Her play Breaths won 2nd place at Playwrights’ Center of San Francisco’s Best Short Plays of 2019 Showcase. Her play Her Own Things is published in the Fall 2019 issue of African Voices Magazine. Recent dramaturgy credits include Inked Baby at Crowded Fire Theater. Amissa is an Assistant Professor of Performing Arts at Saint Mary’s College of California.
ETEYA TRINIDAD (Mirror Face), she/her, is a playwright, stage manager, and theater artist. Her full-length play, La Sirena, was recognized as a finalist for the 2019 Bay Area Playwrights Festival and received a staged reading at Ross Valley Players last fall. She wrote and directed her first play, La Mestiza’s Colors, with the College Players at the University of San Francisco in 2017. Since then, her work has been seen at San Francisco Olympians Festival, Amios West, 3Girls Theatre, and Theatre is the Cure, among others. This is her first year with the PlayGround Writers Pool.
BACILIO MENDEZ II (Pivot), he/him, is a proud member of Actors’ Equity and SAG-AFTRA. A 2019-20 Monday Night PlayGround initiate, as an actor, Bacilio is excited to now be a member of the Writers Pool. Cross your fingers for Bacilio; he’s waiting on CA Bar Exam results.
CHRIS STEELE (She Rows), they/them, is a queer trans nonbinary performance artist, writer, and activist. Their work centers on highlighting queer narratives throughout history and combating bigotry and white supremacy. As an actor, they have performed with companies across the Bay including We Players, NCTC, Cutting Ball, SF Shakespeare Festival, and the SF Playwrights Festival. As a writer they premiered adaptations of Miss Julie and Troilus and Cressida with their queer collective: Poltergeist Theatre Project. Chris is a co-founder of Poltergeist Theatre Project: a new queer theater collective, on instagram @poltergeist_theatre_project, and their award-winning drag personas Polly Amber Ross and Peter Pansexual can be found on instagram @pollyandpeter, where they’ve been creating politically subversive video performance art throughout the Covid pandemic.
SAMUEL KELLY FAIR LEVIT (Pillow Guy), he/him, is a Bay Area playwright. His work has been seen and developed in the Apprentice Showcase at Magic Theatre, and at Bennington College. He was a finalist for the 2019 SETC Ready to Publish Award. Most recently, he was the 2020 Development Fellow at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

MICHAEL BARRETT AUSTIN (A Modern Odyssey, “Narrator”), he/him, has worked with Berkeley Repertory Theatre, TheatreWorks, SF Playhouse, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Center Repertory Theatre, San Jose Stage, 42nd Street Moon, Central Works, TheatreFIRST, and many others. Michael has also starred in several independent films, appeared on television series and been featured in many commercials and industrials.He is married to a fantastic woman named Emily, and is the father of a beautiful daughter named Lucille. EZRA REAVES (A Modern Odyssey, “Protagonist”), they/them, Ezra Reaves (they/them) is a professional performer, comedian, singer and experimental theater artist. They’ve tour nationally and internationally with The Neo-Futurists, performed over 150 shows as Velma in the immersive show The Speakeasy and most recently played Spike/Shorty in Patricia Cotter’s world-premiere play The Daughters at SF Playhouse. As a comedian, Ezra has opened for Janeane Garofalo, Bob Odenkirk, John Hodgman, Paul F. Tompkins and even shared the stage with Michael Ian Black at SF Sketchfest. More info at www.ezrareaves.com
KAREN OFFEREINS (A Modern Odyssey, “Therapist/Voicemail”), she/her, first performed with MNP in 2016 and has enjoyed playing there ever since. She was last seen in Custom Made Theatre’s How to Transcend a Happy Marriage, having previously performed there in The Pain and the Itch and M. Butterfly. She was also seen in Elevada at Shotgun Players last year, having previously performed there in The Mousetrap, Top Girls, and Our Town. Past credits include Two Mile Hollow (Ferocious Lotus), Phèdre (Cutting Ball Theater), The Potrero Nuevo Project (PlayGround), The Rules (SF Playhouse), and Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Big Funk, and No Exit (AtmosTheatre).
MARY E. BAIRD (A Modern Odyssey, “Mother”), she/her, is thrilled to still be a part of this amazing group. Zoom has consumed her life as she works on self motivated projects, classes, readings and cocktail hours.
KRYSTAL MOSLEY (Refusal of the Call, “Chandra”), she/her, comes all the way from Chicago, currently residing in LA and is super excited about the production this evening! Some of her credits include: 10 Virgins with Chicago Dramatist, Ruined with Eclipse Theatre and Blood Wedding with Pursuit Productions. She would like to thank the PlayGround-LA cast, friends and family for their continued support!
SHEILA COLLINS (Refusal of the Call, “Annette”), she/her, has portrayed Emilia in Othello, Ruth in A Raisin in the Sun, Grace Farrell in Annie, Nancy in Oliver!, among others, and has appeared numerous times on the stage of PlayGround LA’s productions in original plays by talented playwrights and talented actors, directors and crew. She is pleased to be working with PLA’s sister company for the first time.
LOUEL SEÑORES (Pivot, “Donny”), he/him, acknowledges how privileged he is that he still gets to do theater in the time of Covid. His next zoom show is “You Betta Ask Somebody” with Put Ur Play On Productions on Dec 4-5 & 11-12. And if you haven’t listened to NCTC’s “The Law of Attraction” yet, you have 2 more days after tonight! He also gets to write and act for Berkeley Interactive Theater as they put on Zoom DEI workshops for UC faculty, staff, and students. For his day job, he manages As You Wish Frozen Yogurt in Albany. JENNY NGUYEN NELSON (Mirror Face, “Jackie”) is a second year MFA actor with Brown Trinity Rep’s Acting/Directing Program. She loves the Bay Area and has performed with Cal Shakes (Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Somebody in Everybody), was an acting fellow with Killing My Lobster, taken part in Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor New Works. She is thankful to be back with Playground SF in the Zoomsphere and sends a special special shoutout to her husband Ian who has been an immense support. Also she’s a new AUNTIE as of 11/15 so she’s sending some love to her new nephew!!!
ALICIA MASON (Mirror Face, “Sonia”), she/her, is a Bay Area born and raised actor. She works locally in film, theater and voice over. She graduated from the 2 year acting program at The Meisner Technique Studio with Jim Jarrett and Melissa Thompson Esaia. Her passion is to continue to collaborate with local Bay Area artists and to keep telling the stories from the communities of color she grew up in.
AYELET FIRSTENBERG (Mirror Face, “Mirror Face”) recently moved from the Bay to farm country PA. She has appeared in PlayGround’s Vignettes on Love and many a Monday night.
AMY LIZARDO (She Rows, “Ocean/Lover”) is an actor, singer and teaching artist. She has worked with a number of theatre companies around the country including: Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Arena Stage, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, American Conservatory Theatre, Theatreworks Silicon Valley and many more. Amy received her Masters degree form San Jose State University and is represented by SMS Talent.
LUCINDA SERRANO (She Rows, “Mother”), she/her, has performed with many Bay Area theatre companies such as: Theatreworks, Pacific Repertory Theatre and PlayGround. Though she is currently sheltering-in-place in Tuscon, Arizona, she is a commercial actor (tv & film) in Los Angeles where she shares a home with her pitbull, Casper.

Next up, Baboons in the Nighthouse, a new play by Christopher Magee and part of the PlayGround 2020 Innovators Showcase. STEPHANIE PRENTICE (The Pillow Guy, “Asphodel”), she/her, is a Bay Area native, AEA member, and serves as the casting director for TheatreFirst in Berkeley. In addition to being a proud PlayGround company member, Stephanie is also a member of the PlayGround Board, and co-chair of the PlayGround Ambassadors. Her kids are the BEST.
BRIAN LEVI (The Pillow Guy, “My Pillow Guy”), he/him, is thrilled to work with PlayGround again. Most recently in Beckett’s Embers (Henry) with Anton’s Well, Below Sycamore (Hezacate) at The Shelton in SF, SF Shakes Hamlet (Claudius) and A View from the Bridge (Alfieri) at the Pear, Brian has performed all over the Bay Area for many years with such theatres as Custom Made, SF Olympians, SF Fringe, Golden Thread, Theatre Rhino, Playwrights’ Foundation, Hillbarn, Dragon, and City Lights. DIRECTORS
ELY SONNY ORQUIZA (A Modern Odyssey), he/him, is a company member of PlayGround and a freelance theater maker based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through theater and the performing arts Orquiza explores the role of the Asian diaspora, Asian American experience, ancestral ghosts, and the politics of Queer/ness for the American stage. He champions new works by Artists of Color, examines previously untold folklore, and advocates for undiscovered works highlighting multiethnic narrative. He’s so thrilled to be back at PlayGround sharing the virtual space with local talents!
KATHERINE HAMILTON (Refusal of the Call), she/her, is thrilled to be back at PlayGround after directing for Monday Night in April. She most recently directed 3 plays for UCSB Launch Pad’s zoom festival Alone Together and assistant directed at Indiana Repertory Theatre and TheatreWorks Silicon Valley. She was most recently seen onstage as Emmy in “A Doll’s House Part 2” (Palo Alto Players) and online in Volume 3 of the zoom series Our Digital Stories. Katherine graduated from UCSB with a B.A. in English and Theatre and was a directing apprentice at PlayGround SF.
RONDRELL MCCORMICK (Pivot)
CLAIRE GANEM (Mirror Face), she/her, is a Bay Area based director. She is thrilled to be joining PlayGround’s 27th season as a new company member, after graduating from the directing apprentice program last year. In addition to Monday Night PlayGround, her work has been featured at Magic Theatre, Cutting Ball Theatre, and PianoFight.
TRACY WARD (She Rows) is a Freelance Director based in the Bay Area, focusing on New Works. Recent: World Premiere of Disbelief by Garret Groenveld at PlayGround, World Premiere of The Lady Scribblers at CMT. Regional Premieres include: The Cake at NCTC, Actually at Aurora Theatre Company; When We Were Young and Unafraid by Sarah Treem at CustomMade Theatre in SF; Bright Shining Sea by Julianne Jigour at PlayGround; The Thrush and the Woodpecker, The Dragon Play, and What Every Girl Should Know at Impact Theatre. JIM KLEINMANN (The Pillow Guy, Artistic Director & Co-Founder), he/him, co-founded PlayGround in 1994, along with playwright Brighde Mullins and director Denise Shama, and has served as Artistic Director since 1996. For PlayGround, he has provided artistic and administrative leadership for the past twenty-four seasons, developing PlayGround’s unique array of new playwright and new play incubator programs, including Monday Night PlayGround, the PlayGround Festival of New Works, the full-length play Commissioning Initiative, the New Play Production Fund, Potrero Stage: PlayGround Center for New Plays, and most recently the Innovator Incubator. For PlayGround, he has directed more than one hundred short and full-length plays, including works by Garret Jon Groenveld, Aaron Loeb, Geetha Reddy, Lauren Yee, Katie May, and many others. Recent directing and dramaturgy credits include David Steele’s Vignettes on Love and Ruben Grijalva’s Value Over Replacement. He is a veteran arts administrator with more than thirty years of experience, including stints leading Traveling Jewish Theatre, Smuin Ballet and Berkeley Symphony, and received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.
PRODUCTION & STAFF
ALDO BILLINGSLEA (Associate Producer), a long-time PlayGround Company Member, has worked with PlayGround as actor, director, script reader and board member. As an actor, he has worked throughout the Bay with Cal Shakes, TheatreWorks, Marin Theatre Company, Aurora Theatre Company, Center Rep, and Marin Shakespeare. He has served on boards with Arabian Shakespeare, Gritty City Youth Repertory and the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre where he also served as Interim Artistic Director. Aldo is the Father William J. Rewak S.J. Professor of Theatre Arts at Santa Clara University.
SARAH GASSER (Resident Stage Manager & Sound Designer) joined PlayGround in 2017 and has staged managed for the Monday Night PlayGround series and PlayGround Festival. She stagemanages for companies around the Bay Area, including Brava and Bay Area Children’s Theatre. In her administrative capacities, she assists with PlayGround’s marketing, social media, communications, and website, as well as serving as assistant to the Artistic Director.
COLIN JOHNSON (Visual Designer) is a multi-hyphenate production artist who has sullied the grounds of the Bay Area arts since 2008. His work has been produced or featured at PlayGround, Pianofight, The Circus Center Cabaret, San Diego Comic-Con, Image Comics, Potrero Stage, Pint-Sized Plays, The Olympians Festival, Shotz, Shotgun Players, The Curran, and various theatre, radio and film venues throughout the country. He is the Artistic Director of Awesome Theatre, Chief Creative Officer at Troubleshoot Productions and an Instructor / Director / Designer at Circus Center. He makes movies until he gets too frustrated and makes theatre until he has panic attacks.
ANNIE STUART (Associate Artistic Director) has served as casting director for PlayGround for the past twenty-one seasons. In 2005, she was named PlayGround’s first Associate Director, recognizing her increased producing responsibilities, and was recently named Associate Artistic Director. As a freelance casting director, her other credits include Marin Theatre Company, Center REP, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, San Francisco and Los Angeles Shakespeare Festivals, Brava! for Women In The Arts, Theatre Rhinoceros, and Z Space Studio, among others. For the camera, she has cast Falcon Crest, An Inconvenient Woman, Midnight Caller and The Two Mrs. Grenvilles. She has taught at San Jose State University, The Bennett Theatre Lab, Center REP, the College of Marin, Marin Theatre Company and for Theatre Bay Area.
PLAYGROUND, California’s leading playwright incubator, provides unique development opportunities for the Bay Area’s (and now Los Angeles’) best new playwrights, including the monthly Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, annual PlayGround Festival of New Works, full-length play commissions and support for the production of new plays by local playwrights through the New Play Production Fund. To date, PlayGround has supported over 200 early career playwrights, developing and staging more than 850 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and the PlayGround Festival. PlayGround has also commissioned 85 new full-length plays by 55 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative and, through the innovative New Play Production Fund, has directly facilitated the premiere of 30 plays at theatres of every size, including three that have gone on to NYC and other major theater communities. Most recently, PlayGround renovated and relaunched the former Thick House Theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill as Potrero Stage, a state-of-the-art center for new plays, home to PlayGround’s expanding artistic programs and some of the Bay Area’s most distinguished new play developers and producers. Over the past twenty-four years, PlayGround has served to identify some of the most important new local voices for the theatre. PlayGround’s alumni have gone on to win local, national, and international honors for their short and full-length work, including recognition at the Humana Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, New York International Fringe Festival, and others.
