PLAYWRIGHTS

TOM BRUETT (Playwright, HOA Policy) is a playwright with work produced at La Jolla Playhouse/Blindspot Collective, PianoFight, SF Fringe, PCSF, ReGroup Theatre, Lakeshore Players, Players’ Theatre and Best of PlayGround 23 and 24. His full-length PlayGround commission, The Nesting Instinct, was read as part of Zoom Fest 2020. 

REG CLAY (Playwright, Woodhull and the Jailer) is very proud to have his work featured in Monday Night PlayGround.  A graduate of Duke Ellington School of the Arts and NYU, Reg has had his work featured by several companies: Plethos Productions (Four Men In Paris), Eastenders Repertory Company (Father/Son – for Pride Open), Musical Cafe (Nia) and more.  Reg’s play, Judicial Process, will be one of five plays to be featured on Zoom by the Brecht Project: www.thebrechtproject.org.  Check it out.

LAUREN GORSKI (Playwright, Starting from Scratchy) is in her sixth season of PlayGround (!) and is a past playwright-in-residence. Besides plays, she writes screenplays, fiction, poetry, and a killer email. Her plays have been performed in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and now on a computer screen near you . She is also the Co-Editor-In-Chief of Exposition Review, a multi-genre literary journal.

LISA KANG (Playwright, Brick Into Mirrors) is the founder of Same Boat Theater Collective, the Bay Area’s first environmental justice theater company and a member of PlayGround’s Innovator Incubator. She is currently producing EarthQuake, a global festival of new environmental justice plays Zoomed from the Bay Area, New Delhi and London on Oct 25. https://www.sameboattheater.org.

ANNE YUMI KOBORI (Playwright, The Art of Suffrage) is an actor/playwright/director/producer. Her plays Seeds and Every Day Alice, and her adaptation of The Seagull, have premiered with Utopia Theatre Project. CHRISTOPHER ROBIN MAGEE (Playwright, To Ride, To Fight, To Slay the Ballot) was born in Montana. He is the founder and artistic director of the Moonrisers, a Bay Area Theater Company. With them he has written and produced 10 plays. He’s currently thinking about doing an 11th.

He’s also performed with the San Francisco Mime Troupe; Best of PlayGround  Festival – Zoomfest; Aurora Theatre Company; Sacramento Theatre Company; Capital Stage Company; San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Pacific Conservatory Theatre; TheatreWorks; Shotgun Theater and the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre. MICHAEL BARRETT AUSTIN (Knight Two, To Ride, To Fight, To Slay the Ballot) has worked with Berkeley Repertory Theatre, TheatreWorks, SF Playhouse, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Center Repertory Theatre, San Jose Stage,  42nd Street Moon, Central Works, TheatreFIRST, and many others. Michael has also starred in several independent films, appeared on television series and been featured in many commercials and industrials.

JULIA BROTHERS (Samantha, HOA Policy) is a PlayGround Company member and so happy to be working with Susi Damilano (as a director) and Suzanne Grodner – both for the first time!!! Yes, Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus! Next up for Julia: her as yet untitled one woman show at SF Playhouse in the Spring.

SUZANNE GRODNER (Connie, HOA Policy) is thrilled to be a part of PlayGround. She has worked in over 80 productions – on Broadway, on National Tours, in Regional Theatres, and in the Bay Area. She recently completed four years on the road with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and looks forward to the Theatre coming back again soon.

MATTHEW HANJOONG (Frankie, The Art of Suffrage) is a California native and a graduate from Sacramento State University. Most recently, he was seen virtually in Capital Stage’s production of The Great Leap and onstage in Gold Hill Samurai at the Wakamatsu Festival; Compleat Female Stage Beauty at Sacramento State; and in The Three Musketeers at American River College. Matthew has also studied at UCLA with Academy Award Winner, Tim Robbins and The Actor’s Gang.

MONICA HO (Eve, Starting from Scratchy) is excited to be working with Monday Night PlayGround. Monica currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a recent graduate of the American Conservatory Theatre MFA program, class of 2020. Regional credits include Top Girls (American Conservatory Theater); The Good Person of Szechuan (California Shakespeare Theater); Noises Off (SF Playhouse); The Taming (Marin Shakespeare Company); Crane (Ferocious Lotus Theater Company); Shiner (FaultLine Theater). Monica is the winner of the 2016 San Francisco Bay Area Critics Circle Award for Best Actress for her work in In Love and Warcraft (Custom Made Theater). She currently spends most of shelter-in-place working on her one-woman show, China Doll with Theater Mu, virtually premiering at the end of  October. @1monicaho

PATRICK KELLY JONES (Jailer, Woodhull and the Jailer) has been acting with PlayGround since 2011. As a professional he’s performed in over 50 plays all over the Bay Area and the country. MICHELLE KRUSIEC (Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, Brick Into Mirrors) is an award winning actor/writer/director who’s starred in almost 300 episodes of television and 36 films. Recent credits include Anna May Wong in Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood, Wild Goose Dreams at the Public Theatre. She is a filmmaker in the 2021 AFI Directing Workshop for Women.

She has worked with a number of theatre companies around the country including: Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Arena Stage, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, American Conservatory Theatre, Theatreworks Silicon Valley and many more. Amy received her Masters degree form San Jose State University and is represented by SMS Talent.

BRADY MORALES WOOLERY Scratchy) is a Bay Area based actor. Favorite roles include: Andrej in Once (42nd Street Moon), Josh Watson in The Watson Intelligence (Shotgun Players), Paul in Bright Shining Sea (SF PlayGround), and Paul in Barefoot in the Park (Willows Theatre Company). He originated the role of Mario Savio in FSM, a musical about the free speech movement at UC Berkeley. Onscreen he has appeared in Quitters, Pushing Dead and The Internship. JENNY NGUYEN NELSON (Mika, The Art of Suffrage) is a second year MFA actor with Brown Trinity Rep’s Acting/Directing Program. She loves the Bay Area and has performed with Cal Shakes and Killing My Lobster as well as taken part in Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor New Works. She is thankful to be back with PlayGround SF in the Zoomsphere! She sends a special special shoutout to her husband Ian who has been an immense support.

JOSEPH O’MALLEY (Knight One, To Ride, To Fight, To Slay the Ballot) is a member of Actor’s Equity and SAG-AFTRA, having most recently appeared on stage in Cal Shakes’ Macbeth, Marin Shakespeare Co.’s Spamalot! and Aurora Theatre Co.’s Creditors, as well as Magic Theatre’s Virgin Play Festival (Joshua Harmon’s Prayer for the French Republic). During COVID-19, in PlayGround’s Best of PlayGround – Zoom Fest, as a motion capture artist for 2k Studios/Take-Two Interactive and an independent content creator for Wish. He holds an MFA in Acting from USC and a BA in Theatre Arts from Santa Clara University. His film Brief was an official selection of the 2017 Napa Valley Film Festival and is available on Vimeo.

MELISSA ORTIZ (Victoria Woodhull, Woodhull and the Jailer) is a PlayGround and ShotzSF company member. She received her MFA in Acting from the National Theater Conservatory in Denver CO. Most recently she played Regan in SF Shakespeare’s King Lear. She’d like to thank her family and her husband for their love and support.

ROBERT SICULAR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Brick Into Mirrors) was born and raised in a theatrical family in Berkeley, California, and has been a performer since the tender age of three. His lifelong devotion to refining his craft as an actor has been recognized and rewarded over and over again by the theatrical community and has resulted in a rich and varied body of work.  He has appeared in theaters all across America. Locally, in the San Francisco Bay Area, Robert has performed with the Berkeley Repertory, ACT, the San Jose Repertory, the Marin Theatre Company, the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, and the California/Berkeley Shakespeare Festival. Other theaters where Robert performs or has performed include the Denver Center Theatre Company, South Coast Repertory, Seattle Repertory, Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Sacramento Theatre Company, the Colorado, Lake Tahoe, the Santa Fe Shakespeare Festivals, the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC, and for eight years, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland.

ISABEL ANNE TO (Attendant, Brick Into Mirrors) is thrilled to be a new PlayGround company member after first joining Monday Night PlayGround in 2017. She most recently performed in the PlayGround Zoom Fest readings of Victoria Chong Der’s Translations and Geetha Reddy’s Safe House. SUSI DAMILANO (Director, HOA Policy) is co-founder and producing director of the Playhouse. Directing credits include Playhouse productions of Groundhog Day the Musical, Cabaret, Mary Poppins, Noises Off, She Loves Me, Stage Kiss, Company, Stupid Fucking Bird, Into the Woods, A Behanding in Spokane, Den of Thieves, and Wirehead (SFBATCC nomination), the West Coast premieres of Honey Brown Eyes (SFBATCC nomination), Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Coronado, The Mystery Plays, and Roulette, and the world premieres of On Clover Road by Steven Dietz, From Red to Black by Rhett Rossi, and Seven Days by Daniel Heath in the Sandbox Series.She is a five-time recipient of the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Excellence in Theatre Award for Principal Actress in a Play for the Playhouse productions of Abigail’s Party, Harper Regan, Bug, Six Degrees of Separation, and Reckless. Susi has also performed leading roles here in Yoga Play, The Effect, The Roommate, Red Velvet, Tree, Bauer, Abigail’s Party, Harper Regan, Coraline, Slasher, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Landscape of the Body, First Person Shooter, Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, The Crucible, Kimberly Akimbo, Our Town, and The Smell of the Kill.

NORMAN GEE (Director, To Ride, To Fight, To Slay the Ballot) has enjoyed Bay Area Theater for years, performing with Lorraine Hansberry Theater, Shotgun Players,Central Works, SF-Shakes, TheatreWorks, SF-PlayGround, Ubuntu, Word for Word. Founder of the Oakland Public Theater, Norman creates ‘a different kind of Black Theater’, expanding notions of culture to encompass often invisible roles of African Americans.

CINDY GOLDFIELD (Director, Brick Into Mirrors)

JIM KLEINMANN (Director, Woodhull and the Jailer; Artistic Director & Co-Founder) co-founded PlayGround in 1994, along with playwright Brighde Mullins and director Denise Shama, and has served as Artistic Director since 1996. For PlayGround, he has provided artistic and administrative leadership for the past twenty-four seasons, developing PlayGround’s unique array of new playwright and new play incubator programs, including Monday Night PlayGround, the PlayGround Festival of New Works, the full-length play Commissioning Initiative, the New Play Production Fund, Potrero Stage: PlayGround Center for New Plays, and most recently the Innovator Incubator.  For PlayGround, he has directed more than one hundred short and full-length plays, including works by Garret Jon Groenveld, Aaron Loeb, Geetha Reddy, Lauren Yee, Katie May, and many others. Recent directing and dramaturgy credits include David Steele’s Vignettes on Love and Ruben Grijalva’s Value Over Replacement. He is a veteran arts administrator with more than thirty years of experience, including stints leading Traveling Jewish Theatre, Smuin Ballet and Berkeley Symphony, and received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

JEFFREY LO (Director, The Art of Suffrage) is a Filipino-American playwright and director based in the Bay Area. He is the recipient of the Leigh Weimers Emerging Arist Award, the Emerging Artist Laureate by Arts Council Silicon Valley and Theatre Bay Area Director’s TITAN Award. Selected directing credits include The Language Archive and The Santaland Diaries at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, Vietgone at Capital Stage, A Doll’s House, Part 2 and Eurydice at Palo Alto Players (TBA Awards finalist for Best Direction), Peter and the Starcatcher and Noises Off at Hillbarn Theatre, The Grapes of Wrath, The Crucible and Yellow Face at Los Altos Stage Company and Uncle Vanya at the Pear Theatre (BATCC award for Best Production). As a playwright, his plays have been produced and workshopped at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, The BindleStiff Studio, City Lights Theatre Company and Custom Made Theatre Company. His play Writing Fragments Home was a finalist for the Bay Area Playwright’s Conference and a semi-finalist for the O’Neill Playwright’s Conference. Jeffrey has also worked with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Asian American International Film Festival, San Jose Repertory and is a company member of Ferocious Lotus Theatre Company and SF PlayGround. In addition to his work in theatre he works as an educator and advocate for issues of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and has served as a grant panelist for the Zellerbach Family Foundation, Silicon Valley Creates and Theatre Bay Area. He is the Director Community Partnerships and Casting Director at the Tony Award Winning TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, a graduate of the Multicultural Arts Leadership Institute and a proud alumnus of the UC Irvine Drama Department. EMILIE TALBOT (Director, Starting from Scratchy) is a Bay Area based actor, director, teacher, and voice artist. A PlayGround company member since 2018, she has acted in and directed numerous Monday Night PlayGrounds and directed HEDGE for the 2017 New Works Festival. PRODUCTION & STAFF

ALDO BILLINGSLEA (Associate Producer), a long-time PlayGround Company Member, has worked with PlayGround as actor, director, script reader and board member. As an actor, he has worked throughout the Bay with Cal Shakes, TheatreWorks, Marin Theatre Company, Aurora Theatre Company, Center Rep, and Marin Shakespeare. He has served on boards with Arabian Shakespeare, Gritty City Youth Repertory and the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre where he also served as Interim Artistic Director. Aldo is the Father William J. Rewak S.J. Professor of Theatre Arts at Santa Clara University.

SARAH GASSER (Resident Stage Manager & Sound Designer) joined PlayGround in 2017 and has staged managed for the Monday Night PlayGround series and PlayGround Festival. She stagemanages for companies around the Bay Area, including Brava and Bay Area Children’s Theatre. In her administrative capacities, she assists with PlayGround’s marketing, social media, communications, and website, as well as serving as assistant to the Artistic Director.

COLIN JOHNSON (Visual Designer) is a multi-hyphenate production artist who has sullied the grounds of the Bay Area arts since 2008. His work has been produced or featured at PlayGround, Pianofight, The Circus Center Cabaret, San Diego Comic-Con, Image Comics, Potrero Stage, Pint-Sized Plays, The Olympians Festival, Shotz, Shotgun Players, The Curran, and various theatre, radio and film venues throughout the country. He is the Artistic Director of Awesome Theatre, Chief Creative Officer at Troubleshoot Productions and an Instructor / Director / Designer at Circus Center. He makes movies until he gets too frustrated and makes theatre until he has panic attacks.

ANNIE STUART (Associate Artistic Director) has served as casting director for PlayGround for the past twenty-one seasons. In 2005, she was named PlayGround’s first Associate Director, recognizing her increased producing responsibilities, and was recently named Associate Artistic Director. As a freelance casting director, her other credits include Marin Theatre Company, Center REP, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, San Francisco and Los Angeles Shakespeare Festivals, Brava! for Women In The Arts, Theatre Rhinoceros, and Z Space Studio, among others. For the camera, she has cast Falcon Crest, An Inconvenient Woman, Midnight Caller and The Two Mrs. Grenvilles. She has taught at San Jose State University, The Bennett Theatre Lab, Center REP, the College of Marin, Marin Theatre Company and for Theatre Bay Area.

PLAYGROUND, California’s leading playwright incubator, provides unique development opportunities for the Bay Area’s (and now Los Angeles’) best new playwrights, including the monthly Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, annual PlayGround Festival of New Works, full-length play commissions and support for the production of new plays by local playwrights through the New Play Production Fund. To date, PlayGround has supported over 200 early career playwrights, developing and staging more than 850 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and the PlayGround Festival. PlayGround has also commissioned 85 new full-length plays by 55 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative and, through the innovative New Play Production Fund, has directly facilitated the premiere of 30 plays at theatres of every size, including three that have gone on to NYC and other major theater communities. Most recently, PlayGround renovated and relaunched the former Thick House Theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill as Potrero Stage, a state-of-the-art center for new plays, home to PlayGround’s expanding artistic programs and some of the Bay Area’s most distinguished new play developers and producers. Over the past twenty-four years, PlayGround has served to identify some of the most important new local voices for the theatre. PlayGround’s alumni have gone on to win local, national, and international honors for their short and full-length work, including recognition at the Humana Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, New York International Fringe Festival, and others.
