Young Playwrights Contest Deadline Extended!

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its continuing impact on Bay Area schools and students, PlayGround has extended the submission deadline for students applying to the 2020 Young Playwrights Contest. High School students from the Bay Area nine counties are invited to submit by the extended deadline of Monday, April 27 their original ten-minute plays inspired by this year’s timely and relevant prompt, “Borders, Islands, and Walls,” presented in partnership with  Planet Earth Arts as part of PlayGround’s now six-year collaboration on the development of environmental-inspired plays. In a parallel effort, PlayGround just belatedly completed its 2019-20 Monday Night PlayGround season this past week with its first-ever Zoom-based Monday Night PlayGround Live Stream, featuring the top six short works by its professional writers as part of this year’s “Planet Earth Arts Night”. For more information and complete guidelines for this year’s Young Playwrights Contest, visit https://playground-sf.org/ypp-guidelines.

Another impact of the pandemic and current shelter-in-place order, PlayGround will perform the selected Young Playwrights Project finalist scripts via live stream this year (May date to be confirmed) as part of a modified virtual Best of PlayGround Festival instead of at PlayGround’s home theater, Potrero Stage, where the festival and Young Playwrights Project have been based since 2008. Students will have the opportunity to see their award-winning scripts rehearsed and performed by leading local actors and directors for a socially-distanced audience through live-stream technology.

In addition to the Contest, through the 12th Annual Howard & Lenore Klein Foundation Young Playwrights Project, PlayGround also offers students free or discounted tickets to attend all of PlayGround’s public performances, including a soon-to-be-announced virtual 24th Annual PlayGround Festival of New Works.  For more information on tickets and accessibility, schools can contact ypp@playground-sf.org.
