Let’s Try This Again
by Jennifer Le Blanc

Cast of Characters:
ROB: M 20s-30s, White, middle class. He thinks he’s charming and funny. Others might disagree.
DENISE: F 20s, Any race, leaving work. She’s wearing a dress with pockets and a jacket.
MARTHA: F 40s, Any race, Modern Feminist Vengeance Faerie. Wings, combat boots, reading glasses, snarky attitude, piercings, wand- and she’s fresh out of patience for the patriarchy.

Scene:
A street in Downtown Berkeley or San Francisco.

Time:
5:30 tonight.

DENISE walks down the street. ROB watches.?
MARTHA watches both of them.

ROB
Damn, you got a fine ass.
(DENISE smiles and keeps walking.)
You’re not going to come talk to me?

MARTHA waves a wand and freezes DENISE.

MARTHA
Hi.

ROB
What? Oh, hi. Where did you-? I didn’t see you.

MARTHA
I know. It’s one of my many gifts.

ROB
Is she…?

ROB walks around frozen DENISE, inspects her.

MARTHA
She can’t hear you right now. So, Rob.

ROB
How did you know my name?

MARTHA
I know lots of things. But let’s talk about you, my friend. Dear, dear Bobby.

ROB
It’s just Rob.

MARTHA
I don’t care. You just catcalled a woman in the year of our Lord 2024, Robby.

ROB
Who are you?

MARTHA
I go by many names, Roberto, but today you can call me Martha, Feminist Faerie, Perimenopausal Pixie, Magical Defender of the Female just Trying to Go about Her Mother Fucking Day.

ROB
Great, an angry feminist with no sense of humor.

MARTHA
Honey, what possessed your itty bitty li’l brain to form those words and then let your mouth say them? Out loud. Not all feminists are angry and many of us are deeply funny.

ROB
So you’re not angry?

MARTHA
Oh no, I’m definitely angry and vengeful and my favorite part of existence is not caring whether or not you think I’m funny. Now, catcalling-

ROB
I was just flirting.

MARTHA
You call that flirting? Are you always this shitty with women?
(HE’s about to speak. SHE freezes his mouth.)
Nope. That was the most rhetorical of questions.
(SHE “boops” him on the nose with her wand.)
Boop. How did you think this “flirting” was going, Bobert? Let’s see, what was your
hopeful outcome?

SHE waves her wand. DENISE and ROB walk
backwards to initial starting positions making
VCR rewind noises. MARTHA starts them.
